ADS Universal Expectations

PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports. PBIS is a multi-tiered approach to social, emotional, and behavioral support within a school. Abbot-Downing School is implementing PBIS to expand effectiveness, efficiency, and equity for all students. Through PBIS, Abbot-Downing School strives to cultivate social, emotional, and academic outcomes for our students.

The Universal Team is the first tier, which works on formulating expectations for the whole school to demonstrate. This year the team has worked on creating and providing universal expectations for the whole school to utilize. The team plans multiple ways to teach the school community the universal expectations. We do this by introducing the expectations within the classrooms and coming together monthly in a whole school gathering. The gathering introduces a monthly expectation, celebrates achievement, and/or recognizes important events. Throughout the month students demonstrate their skills on their newly learned expectation. They are acknowledged and rewarded with golden horseshoe tickets. Tickets are counted and visually displayed using the ‘Mustang Race’ board seen in the hallway. At the next school gathering the classroom with the most tickets is celebrated and receives the prize of holding on to the Golden Horseshoe for the month.
